UVA-Wise has advanced to the Regional Tournament after a 13-9 win over King College last night. The game went 14 innings, saw two ejections, and lasted over six hours. The final out was recored around 2 a.m. this morning. Wise will have a re-match with Union today at 3 p.m. at Hunter Wright Stadium.


I can honestly say, I have never in my life been more proud of my school, either PV or UVA-Wise. What our players did last night was amazing. With 1 out in the bottom of the 9th inning and leading my two runs Josh Verts (who has been hurt all year and unable to pitch) gets a pop up to first base, the umpire calls catcher interfearance. A run scores bases loaded and only one out with a one run lead. Verts K's the next batter to set up what I have to say blows the Norton situation out of the water. A weak ground ball was hit to second base, Edwin came up made a wild throw to Bigley at the bag, Bigley stretched on the play attempting to keep his foot on the bag, the first base umpire signals out! Our players rush the field as for the first time in several years were going to the Regional Tournament, but King's coach protest the call and gets it overturned, the home plate umpire said he had a better view of the play and he was safe. After close to 30 minutes of arguing, Coach Bates and Coach Banner ejected, UVA-Wise re-takes the field with one coach, and without the coach that calls every single pitch of the game. Players decide to intentionally walk players/who should pitch etc for the rest of the game. Verts battled back and got us to extras, in the extra innings Wise took the lead twice only to have King come back with the same amount of runs in the bottom half of the inning. However, in the top of the 14th inning the Cavs exploded to put 4 runs on the board off of King's 7th pitcher of the night. Bigley was able to retire the side without damage and the win was finally sealed.

Wild game that had a story book ending before the call, even wilder story book ending now. For Verts who had been hurt to come in and give us those innings were huge. Former LPD Player Robbins started the game and went 6 innings allowing 2 runs and K'ing 7.
